Portable Multimedia Player (PMP)
Portable Multimedia Players or PMPs as they are commonly called are the latest gadget fuzz aside from Play Station Pocket (PSP).
Those in the pic above are made in China… these gadgets can store MP3, MP4, hundreds of games (depends on memory capacity), has TV out function, and those in the above pic is even equipped with a Digicam!
Coooooooool huh?
Before we go to other details of PMPs, lets first see where it all began..
Multimedia = Multiple media.= pictures/video/audio (for now).
I think the first portable multimedia player would have to be the mobile phone. The mobile phone developed into a usual mobile phone for call and text messaging to “what computers have become”. If you want to know more about the history of PMPs, visit the PMP wikipedia page.
But some people didn’t like having it all in one… a phone and a media player. So they developed Digital media players. Then rivals, wanting to be different (only in name) Released the mp4 players. I’ve seen these MP4 players as my brother is a big fan of these gadgets. And they’re still here.
Then came the iPod. A branded/expensive multimedia player. Its a small, portable, rich in functionality, big storage, and hip device.
During the iPod era, there emerged copy cats.. and labeled their products as Portable Media Players. Then It became Portable Multimedia Player.
Umm.. what’s the difference between an MP3 player - MP4 player - Digital media Player and PMP?????
An mp3 player can only play audio.
An Mp4 Player can play audio and video.
A Digital media Player can play audio, video and view pics.
A PMP can do them all plus more! So what does a typical PMP do? Here’s a list:
- Act as a flash drive
- View pictures
- Playback audio
- Playback video
- Audio recording
- Play Games (yes like the PSP)
- You’ve seen in the above pic.. PMP now have Digital Cameras that means it may now have video recording as well.
- TV Ourput
Its like going back to being a Mobile phone. hahahhahaha
If they’d enable a PMP to do calls and text messaging.. I’m sure they’ll say ” a PMP which doubles as mobile phone” or PMP and mobile in one” when in fact,… It really came from being mobile phones.
Well, PMP users would say that difference will be PMPs have bigger screen than the usual mobile phones.. But hey… Why have a mobile phone with a BIG screen - like 3 to 4 inches? hahahhaha.
For me, its better to have a good mobile phone.. not really high-end or top of the line.. just the one that can give you what you want and what you need. Like if you like games… get something that can play N-Gage games or just plain java games - mind you, there are a lot of cool and great java games.
The latest I’ve read is that Big Names in the tech world are coming up with their own PMPs.. Like Microsoft which is planning to have a wi-fi enables PMP..
Portable multimedia players would just add to your expenses and would just be an additional gadget for you to spend your money at, maintain, carry around, and keep safe.
