N82: My portable scanner

June 11th, 2008 | 4 Comments | Posted in Mobile Brands, Nokia, Opinion, nseries

Talk about maximizing your mobile phone..

I’ve been using my Nokia N82 as a scanner. It doesn’t have a built in scanner.. But i use the Macro shot feature to take pictures of documents that needs to be scanned. So instead of using a real scanner, i just take a picture of the document, transfer the picture from the N82 to my PC. Its quicker (for me).

Here’s a sample “scanned” article:

(Note: picture has been resized – smaller than original file taken using the N82 due to posting problems in wordpress. using windows live writer).

I’ve been “scanning” several work papers and sending them to people via email. I’ve also used the N82 to scan several documents to be used for my credit card application.

Actually, the copy results are better compared to the actual scanner,

This technique is not new as i’ve seen this being done in several movies.. like in James Bond movies. =p

I also use this technique with my 6233 and lately with my 6120c, with the latter having more success. Although these phones don’t have a macro mode, It still have a camera that can zoom on the document. The trick is to set the maximum zoom of the camera then manually adjust the physical distance between the document and the cellphone while viewing the screen to achieve the sharpest picture that is possible so that text remain readable. Once the optimum distance is achieved zoom back to normal and take the shot. This may not be as good as a real macro shot but it can be useful as long as the texts are readable.
