My take on the mobile world…

Home » Mobile Brands » Product leaks – good or bad?

There’s a nice topic over at Nokia Conversations about device/product leaks.

Charlie, the one who wrote the entry, said that product leaks brings trouble and headache… while most who commented said that its beneficial to the company.

The whole history of some product leaks in the past few months is a mixture of dumb moves, broken NDAs, maybe some thievery, and possibly someone with best wishes.

As a mobile phone blogger, I’m selective about the products that i feature in my blogs. For sure Companies would like to build a “hype’ for their products. And by giving a glimpse of what is to come starts the hype. The only problem i see here is if the product is not yet due to be launched soon. Say a leak was publicized in January, and the product is still due to launch in September, if its a really good product, it will stay afloat above other products, but of its not, and a better product is released, then too bad for the company.

Also, those products that people want to know about are those that are different and offers better features or services than what is currently out in the market. If you are making a product that does not have better features, like if you are making an upgrade of the nokia 3210, i don’t think people will even bother wanting to know that, Even your competitors. But if that upgrade of the 3210 will have a touchscreen interface.. then that’s big news!

The Company is to blame for product leaks. We, the public, only pick up what you give out, with or without your consent.

It only works for the Company if its a “regulated leak”. By regulated i mean that the Company knows what information are given out to the public.

With the tight competition nowadays, product leaks makes it look that your company is still in the game. Your users/consumers are being given the advance information and they in turn can decide if they will stay with your brand or jump into another.

Product leaks are inevitable — it’s been part of the whole game for many types of businesses, and it’s going to stay no matter what people say.
