Nokia N82 firmware wish list remains wishes

September 27th, 2008 | 16 Comments | Posted in Mobile Brands, Nokia, nseries

This is a follow-up on my post regarding the recently released firmware for the Nokia N82.

A couple of months ago, I created a wish list of fixes and new features that i would like Nokia to put on the N82. When i first heard that nokia released a firmware update for the N82, i was hoping that most of my wishes would come true.

Sigh….

I’ve already upgraded my Nokia N82’s firmware to the latest release – Firmware version 30. I’ve seen and checked the supposedly change log (summary of fixes and enhancements) but most of which were not in my wish list.

I’m sure most of nokia N82 would love these to be included… however, i think there’s only a few of us who wants these things and there were more users who had problems “playing the batman movie” on their phone.. geeeeez.

Messaging

  • Inserting contacts name and/or numbers in an SMS message
- I don’t think this is a hard feature to install on the phone.

Audio

  • Option to adjust audio when recording either audio or video
- The phone’s microphone pics up even a whisper during video recording. That’s how sensitive it is.. so when taking videos in a noisy environment, you get an annoying audio on the resulting video.

Camera/Video

  • Turn off the red light while shooting a video. I know its used as a sensor for taking pictures and yeah for videos but you should give the user an option to turn it off.
- Give the user the freedom….
  • TURN OFF CAMERA SOUND! Please provide this option! Its so basic and yet its not in the phone. The units he in Asia can’t turn off the camera sounds even if the phone is in silent mode or has turned off the warning tone or even all tones!
- WOW.. i’m really surprised that this feature is not installed for asian n82 phones while some phones in the US and Europe have this.
  • Default option to turn off flash to conserve battery!
- The default option should be NO FLASH… not the other way around.
  • Option to choose a default Scene Mode when taking pictures.
- Freedom to choose the default scene mode.

User interface

  • Add a TAB view on the menu view
  • Separate Video gallery and Photo gallery. Now you can have a use for those redundant buttons. Use the multimedia key above the C (or cancel button) for opening video gallery and the other multimedia gallery on the side of the phone for photos!
- I don’t think this is hard to do.

Fix Problems/bugs

  • My phone sometimes continuously vibrate when i receive an sms message. I’d have to restart it to turn the vibration off.
- So far it has been fixed.. at least one wish came true.

Music (updated 7/17/08)

  • Option to choose which folder to use as source for music files.
- please…..

Here are other wishes from my readers:

  • Make gallery loading much, MUCH faster. and automatically recognise folders as albums (so that when photos are organised and transferred back to phone, they can be recognised as albums without needing nokia software)
  • possibility to save attachments, even if the filetype is not known by the phone (”retrieving” is possible, but you can’t save a copy to the phone/card memory..so you kind of can download it, but can’t access it anyway
- Not sure if this can be done now with the supposed to be enhancement in the email app.
  • possibility to mark search results with the #-key, so that e.g. i can use the result of a contacts-search to send an sms to all contacts in the result
  • web browser:
    > possibility to mark text on a website
    > easier way to open new tabs
    > status-bar where you can see where a link points to, when you hover over it with the “mouse” (and maybe be able to only copy the link location instead to directly load it)
    > general improvement of speed and stability

- Lets see if this was addressed in the latest firmware … fingers crossed!

  • filter contacts by the company field, very useful option for a professional’s phone

This is possible since the device was out!
Just press the # key (shift) to change between numbers and letter when in the “To” field.

    >>”Add a TAB view on the menu view”

This is not possible because of how Symbian works. It would take ages to switch between tabs since every tab would be an application for itself. That would mean that every app should be open for it to work smoothly.

Everything else I agree, more or less.

oh god – NOOOO anything but that. seriously, if i’d have to manually enable the flash everytime i wanted a photo i’d go insane!

it doesn’t default to ON right now, it defaults to AUTO which is completely different. ON=always flash, OFF=never flash, AUTO=”flash if there’s too little light’. if it didn’t detect the lighting and enable the flash when there’s too little… well… it would be completely worthless as a camera to me (err… i have an N95, so actually to my fiance who has the N82).

your other option, of letting the user choose the default scene… that’s the way to implement this request: create a user scene and set it as default – so you can have your battery savings. btw: why bother? the N82 battery life doesn’t seem so desperately affected by the flash to me. or am i biased because my N95-1 has such miserable battery life….?

The funny thing with upgrading to the newer firmware is that the ’switch’ application just does not launch…. i was not able to transfer any data across phones!

    Wishlist:
Perhaps long-pressing the center/select button on links
would mean that the link would open in a new window.

    Profiles:
Only select sound files from folder:
    Drive/Sounds
    and not from all folders.

Microphone in Recorder and Video Recording:
    An AG (Automatic Gain) Setting

    Video Recording
Ability to focus before and during video capture/recording.
If “focus motor noise” is said to be an issue, I’d still prefer that!

    - Those should be easy to add in. They are not impossible at all.

Some other things Nokia could do:

    A Flash indicator in camera?
This function exists in digital cameras, when flash is set to AUTO, a lightning bolt would appear when focus is achieved, to inform the user that the xenon flash will fire when taking the picture.

    “Hold Still” indicator.
Could add a nice touch to the camera, although it isn’t really that important.

    >>Microphone in Recorder and Video Recording:

It already has Automatic Gain. That’s the problem. We need ADJUSTABLE gain.
    Unfortunately, I don’t see it happening… :(

  8. migs Says:

    jo!

    I want that too!

I turned off the auto rotate feature and now im having problems when viewing videos!

    grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Something I should have said earlier:

    Text Entry Bug:
When entering text into any text entry fields, and when pressing “#” to select (or copy and paste), or to change to CAPS and vice versa, the key remains sticky, and this causes text to be highlighted when the navigation button is used to go back or forward to text. This also causes the Softkeys Options to dissapear. The only way to remedy this is to go to the application switcher, and select/go back to the application that is ’stuck’.

Apparently, it seems to be an issue on some handsets only.

    hi mig,
you can turn off N82’s camera sound (also when N82 in silent mode). you need : NSU (nokia software updater), Nemesis Service Suites (phone reader) & tntenforcer.exe (the last one also called GSM magic), plus reliable uniterupted internet connection for about 40 mins :-) . Do following :
    - change your product code to EUs number (i.e : 0549174: RM-313 EURO1) with NSS & tntenforcer.exe
    - update your firmware using NSU for your new product code
    - you gonna ask : where is the shutter click ?? :-)

check howardforums.com for more detail instructions. note : under new product code, you will loose any asian languange(s) pack that you might have.

    My wishlist:
-freedom to assign any application or function to Multimedia key above the ‘C’ key (I would like set it to File Manager). I don’t understand why N82 has 2 keys with the same function: Multimedia/Gallery key
-I cannot make a shortcut to ‘Alarm’ function, only to Clock
    -call recorder
-adjust the threshold on which the screen will rotate -when I’m writing a SMS, screen is rotating even at slightest tilt…
-change the Active Standby lines e.g. WLAN scanning off
-when customizing Profiles I wish I have access to folders when choosing ringtones, instead of viewing entire 8GB micro SD card
-when rejecting a call, or in a call drop there is a screen that shows “Call disconnected”. This screen lingers for about 10 seconds in which you can’t do anything with the phone

The pen key is not anymore a wish now, I find out that the # key has this function.

WTF. He has no idea what the f*** he’s talking about!

Sometimes we add a contacts number in the SMS message’s body.

The red light during video recording is (I think) a security feature so that you cannot take videos in a spy-like manner. Some people wanted privacy.

But I like to turn the red light during video recording, too!

    Good day to all.

    KaYLakS

WTF. Your’e so f******* dumb to not try to understand what I was saying.

Lets say you want to insert a contact card in a text message. You can’t do that on the N82. Sure you can send a business card, but you can’t send it TOGETHER with a text message.

  14. Karl Says:

    Another thing…

    Metering mode. Spot or Evaluative.

  15. Kris Says:

It’s quite easy to add any contacts number to the body of an SMS message on the N82. Simply open your contact list on your phone, then when you find the contact who’s number you want to insert into a text message click on their name and the details page will open. Hightlight the phone number then hit the left select button “options” and scroll down to “use number”. There are two options under “use number” one is “edit” and one is “copy”. If you select copy then open a new sms there will be an option in the options menu for “editing Options” if you highlight this you will have the option to paste what you just copied into the message.
