Nokia N82 firmware wish list remains wishes
![]()
This is a follow-up on my post regarding the recently released firmware for the Nokia N82.
A couple of months ago, I created a wish list of fixes and new features that i would like Nokia to put on the N82. When i first heard that nokia released a firmware update for the N82, i was hoping that most of my wishes would come true.
Sigh….
I’ve already upgraded my Nokia N82’s firmware to the latest release - Firmware version 30. I’ve seen and checked the supposedly change log (summary of fixes and enhancements) but most of which were not in my wish list.
I’m sure most of nokia N82 would love these to be included… however, i think there’s only a few of us who wants these things and there were more users who had problems “playing the batman movie” on their phone.. geeeeez.
Messaging
- Inserting contacts name and/or numbers in an SMS message
Audio
- Option to adjust audio when recording either audio or video
Camera/Video
- Turn off the red light while shooting a video. I know its used as a sensor for taking pictures and yeah for videos but you should give the user an option to turn it off.
- TURN OFF CAMERA SOUND! Please provide this option! Its so basic and yet its not in the phone. The units he in Asia can’t turn off the camera sounds even if the phone is in silent mode or has turned off the warning tone or even all tones!
- Default option to turn off flash to conserve battery!
- Option to choose a default Scene Mode when taking pictures.
User interface
- Add a TAB view on the menu view
- Separate Video gallery and Photo gallery. Now you can have a use for those redundant buttons. Use the multimedia key above the C (or cancel button) for opening video gallery and the other multimedia gallery on the side of the phone for photos!
Fix Problems/bugs
- My phone sometimes continuously vibrate when i receive an sms message. I’d have to restart it to turn the vibration off.
Music (updated 7/17/08)
- Option to choose which folder to use as source for music files.
Here are other wishes from my readers:
- Make gallery loading much, MUCH faster. and automatically recognise folders as albums (so that when photos are organised and transferred back to phone, they can be recognised as albums without needing nokia software)
- possibility to save attachments, even if the filetype is not known by the phone (”retrieving” is possible, but you can’t save a copy to the phone/card memory..so you kind of can download it, but can’t access it anyway
- possibility to mark search results with the #-key, so that e.g. i can use the result of a contacts-search to send an sms to all contacts in the result
- web browser:
> possibility to mark text on a website
> easier way to open new tabs
> status-bar where you can see where a link points to, when you hover over it with the “mouse” (and maybe be able to only copy the link location instead to directly load it)
> general improvement of speed and stability
- Lets see if this was addressed in the latest firmware … fingers crossed!
- filter contacts by the company field, very useful option for a professional’s phone

Comments
>>”Inserting contacts name and/or numbers in an SMS message”
This is possible since the device was out!
Just press the # key (shift) to change between numbers and letter when in the “To” field.
>>”Add a TAB view on the menu view”
This is not possible because of how Symbian works. It would take ages to switch between tabs since every tab would be an application for itself. That would mean that every app should be open for it to work smoothly.
Everything else I agree, more or less.
“Default option to turn off flash to conserve battery!
- The default option should be NO FLASH… not the other way around. ”
oh god - NOOOO anything but that. seriously, if i’d have to manually enable the flash everytime i wanted a photo i’d go insane!
it doesn’t default to ON right now, it defaults to AUTO which is completely different. ON=always flash, OFF=never flash, AUTO=”flash if there’s too little light’. if it didn’t detect the lighting and enable the flash when there’s too little… well… it would be completely worthless as a camera to me (err… i have an N95, so actually to my fiance who has the N82).
your other option, of letting the user choose the default scene… that’s the way to implement this request: create a user scene and set it as default - so you can have your battery savings. btw: why bother? the N82 battery life doesn’t seem so desperately affected by the flash to me. or am i biased because my N95-1 has such miserable battery life….?

The funny thing with upgrading to the newer firmware is that the ’switch’ application just does not launch…. i was not able to transfer any data across phones!
Wishlist:
Perhaps long-pressing the center/select button on links
would mean that the link would open in a new window.
Profiles:
Only select sound files from folder:
Drive/Sounds
and not from all folders.
Microphone in Recorder and Video Recording:
An AG (Automatic Gain) Setting
Video Recording
Ability to focus before and during video capture/recording.
If “focus motor noise” is said to be an issue, I’d still prefer that!
- Those should be easy to add in. They are not impossible at all.
Some other things Nokia could do:
A Flash indicator in camera?
This function exists in digital cameras, when flash is set to AUTO, a lightning bolt would appear when focus is achieved, to inform the user that the xenon flash will fire when taking the picture.
“Hold Still” indicator.
Could add a nice touch to the camera, although it isn’t really that important.
>>Microphone in Recorder and Video Recording:
>>An AG (Automatic Gain) Setting
It already has Automatic Gain. That’s the problem. We need ADJUSTABLE gain.
Unfortunately, I don’t see it happening… ![]()
selectable activation of the auto rotate screen by application. For ex. I want it activated when im viewing my gallery and turned off when im writing SMS.
jo!
I want that too!
I turned off the auto rotate feature and now im having problems when viewing videos!
grrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Something I should have said earlier:
Text Entry Bug:
When entering text into any text entry fields, and when pressing “#” to select (or copy and paste), or to change to CAPS and vice versa, the key remains sticky, and this causes text to be highlighted when the navigation button is used to go back or forward to text. This also causes the Softkeys Options to dissapear. The only way to remedy this is to go to the application switcher, and select/go back to the application that is ’stuck’.
Apparently, it seems to be an issue on some handsets only.
- Give the user the freedom….
* TURN OFF CAMERA SOUND! Please provide this option! Its so basic and yet its not in the phone. The units he in Asia can’t turn off the camera sounds even if the phone is in silent mode or has turned off the warning tone or even all tones!

hi mig,
you can turn off N82’s camera sound (also when N82 in silent mode). you need : NSU (nokia software updater), Nemesis Service Suites (phone reader) & tntenforcer.exe (the last one also called GSM magic), plus reliable uniterupted internet connection for about 40 mins :-). Do following :
- change your product code to EUs number (i.e : 0549174: RM-313 EURO1) with NSS & tntenforcer.exe
- update your firmware using NSU for your new product code
- you gonna ask : where is the shutter click ??
check howardforums.com for more detail instructions. note : under new product code, you will loose any asian languange(s) pack that you might have.

[...] Migs has written on his Migsmobile site that having upgraded to v30 of the N82 firmware, he is left wanting more. [...]
