General System Error

January 31st, 2009 | 2 Comments | Posted in Mobile Brands, Nokia, Opinion

Have you been prompted with this error message on your mobile phone “General System Error”.  Well, its an error that they can’t specifically determine.

I’ve seen this error too. This is how i got it. I was using a 4GB PQI MicroSD card which my brother bought from CDR King as a gift for me.

The moment i plugged it in my Nokia N82, i sensed something different. The phine became slow.. and sometimes unresponsive.

I was happy having a larger memory for my Videos and audio files. However, when i tried playing 11 hours (i forgot how many in terms of quantity) of audio files, it gave me the “General System Error”

I restarted the phone, and this is what i got next…

My music library got corrupted.

Me thinks… this is due to my memory card.. Its either my nokia N82 can’t handle the 4GB memory card (tho i know it should be able to) or the PQI microSD Memory card has a problem.

I’m more on the second possible cause. I think the memory card has a problem.. being so cheap at only 480.00.. i should not be surprised that it has a flaw.

So the next time you have this error when using the music player.. try changing your memory card. You can also try this solution if you’re experiencing this with third party apps on your mobile phone.

This is the main reason why PQI cards are not popular. They tend to be unreliable at sometime – as I read on some forum sites. I have been using a couple of Kingston cards for almost a year now and I never had any single problem using it.

Currently, I’m using 2 Sandisk microSD cards with 6 and 8GB capacity respectively. I will see how it goes far.

Before I forget, Nokia microSD’s seems to be reliable and durable too – I’ve dropped mine for about a couple of meters away and I was surprised – It did not break nor got its file corrupted!

In my experience new memory cards almost always pose problems. Alhough there are quality issues between brands I think this is not a factor here.

Memory cards can become fragmented as well as other storage devices especially if you write and rewrite a lot of times in it. As such a fragmented storage can become troublesome for the phone’s OS. At best it can slow down the phone at worst it can corrupt the memory card.

The best remedy I can recommend is to (re)format it with the phone. Try another phone if you have to because some phones will refuse to format a corrupted MicroSD thinking its only encrypted and will ask you for a password instead.
