Google released a new service called Google Sync for Mobile which lets you synchronize the contacts and calendar on your phone with your Google account and vice versa.

  • Synchronize your Contacts with Google
  • Depending on your phone, get Google Calendar events to your phone
  • Make changes either on your phone or on the Web

I tried using Google Sync for mobile on my Nokia N82 and here’s what happened…

First, set-up was a breeze because of the easy to follow set up instruction that Google Sync for mobile has provided. Check it here.

I only tried syncing the calendar. Coz if you are like me who has tons of contacts on google mail, you might want to skip syncing (read as singking) your contacts from gmail to your phone. Or else, your phone will have tons of names!

After i finsihed setting my calendar up… Its time to synchronize!

First, the contents of your phone will be synced (read as singcked) to your gmail calendar. Afterwhich, your Gmail Calendar entries will be synced to your phone

There. Its as easy as that. The speed of the synchronization will depend on the speed of your internet access. :D

I have some issues regarding Google Sync for mobile.

  • There are “double entries” .

So now you have an entry on your phone and and entry from Google Calendar. Maybe google can find a way to just add an icon on the right side of the phone entry denoting that it has been synced – just like the bell icon you see up there which says that the item has an alarm.

  •  Triple entries

As you can see on the pic above, Jackie’s birthday is on March 05. However, after syncing with Google Calendar, the same entry appeared on March 06, “Bday Jackie”. But when i checked the details… the date is March 05.

  • Maybe they can have add an  ”auto sync”  in Gmail Calendar.

So there. Hope these issues gets fixed on my next sync. :D

Actually, the idea of trying the service popped on my head right after reading this from one of Google’s blogs. Itatry ko na sana but I realized it would be better kung brand-new Google account ang gagamitin ko. Ayoko mapuno ang phone ko ng email addresses. :D

Very helpful. The google sync page doesnt say how to go about setting up sync for N82. I noted, though, that sync only works both ways. Was afraid if I deleted some duplicate entries, the same would show up again. Fortunately, they didn’t even when synching both ways. Thanks for showing the way.

I can see that you use “contacts” for your calendar sync. I tried that but it did not work.
Are you currently able to sync your calendar? and what is the setup?

    Thanks

    Ooops!

No no no.. use “calendar” (without quotes) for your “remote database”

    Sorry for the confusion. :D

The set-up depends on your phone. Choose your phone on the links above. :D

If I specify calendar, when I sync I receive a “Unable to open database”
Strange, the same value works fine on N73 but not on N82.

I guess I’ll have to wait for google to support N82
