Yahoo Messenger Spam
There are new yahoo messenger spam messages being received by a lot of YM users.

“This is like a dream come true for me and my Jenny. We both are living proof that Acai pills work to lose weight quick, we both lost over 30 pounds and still losing, no diet or excercise they just burn the fat off. Get them now for only five dollars at http://losebest.com”
I have been taking Acai pills now for two months and already lost 34 pounds, it is the same stuff that was on oprah and cnn, Mike and Jen lost so much weight too with no diet or excersise. Get it now, its only five bucks a bottle, we are living proof that it works like magic. Get it over at http://wavepeel.com
FInally after all this time I found the only way to lose a lot of weight in just a few weeks and not have to diet or excercise. I seen it on Oprah and Cnn, ordered it and lost 36 pounds in just a few weeks and still losing, they have it now for only five dollars to try at http://wavedate.com
Ever since Dylan and I seen those Acai pills on Cnn and Oprah we have been taking them and losing so much weight so fast with no diet or excercise , we are living proof that it works like magic and they are only five dollars now to try from http://sizeday.com
Another SPIM attack (spim – instant messaging spams).
I’ve received quite a number of these messages.I would call the attention of the sender and he/she will tell me he/she did not send the message or that he/she was off line.
I googled around and found out from CA Security Research Advisor that this is a phishing attempt. So DO NOT OPEN THE WEBSITES on these messages!!!
However, I’m disturbed as how they were able to send a message even if the user if off line. They must have gotten the user’s user name and password.
I remember the old days when i always get a message from my friends which has a link to some website where my PC will get infected by a worm or malware. This was stopped when yahoo introduced new versions of its messenger. But somehow, it looks like the culprits has found another hole or glitch in Yahoo messenger and are able to send these messages.

I got two this morning from 2 people on my contact list on msn. One of which is my wife who’s asleep at time of writing. She’s showing online despite her laptop being off.

I also am infected in some way, since users get messages of me, even when i am not on the computer. I am thinking that my username and password got leaked through a database from a social networksite (where you can sign in and check if someone on you MSN list is also on that social networksite).

My Dad was at my house on my computer and received an IM from his Yahoo Mess just like the Acai spam described. It seems as though everyone one in his address book is receiving these spam IM’s – and he’s not doing it – what has happened? Any suggestions?

This looks like a account compromise. If you use the same username/password combination you use at yahoo at some other not so great sites, then you run the risk of losing your username/password combination if those sites get compromised.
Ideally you should use a really strong password for banks,
somewhat strong for mail/messenger (reputed sites)
throwaway for random signups.
In this case, it’s not yahoo messenger compromised – if it were we’d have seen an urgent update, and posts on their blogs etc. Just change your password and your problem should go away!

I’ve received this from a friend who says he didn’t send it and is getting it himself. A reliable friend. I ALWAYS ck things out on Snopes.com but didn’t with this!?!? Am I ever sorry cuz I fell for it (never do this crap!) and the package came 15 days “after” the 14-day trial period. I refused to sign for it and had to start a dispute with my bank. Since then, 3/1/09 is when it all started, they’ve charged my checking account for roughly $300.00!!!! Well, $150.00 of is was NSF charges as a result of the charges by my bank!! But they credited it all temporarly and all is well for now I hope. Man do I feel like an idiot!! Still waiting on a 85.90 refund and everything will be o.k. But, I had NO IDEA MY PC COULD GET INFECTED!! I ran a virus scan at least a week ago and all was well plus I keep my virus program updated at all times. I just visited the first site I received (BEFORE I GOT TO THIS PAGE wavedate.com) but it wouldn’t go there thank God!! Just showed results for it which led me to this site. So glad it didn’t go to the actual website! *Now to stop rambling … do I need to change my password on Hotmail and Yahoo? Am I infected and if so what should I do?? I can’t believe this crap!! Who in the hell has nothing better to do then mess with ppl??*
I hope others didn’t get into it as deep as I did and I’m not a stupid person. College and all but dear God I fell for this one! Thanks for the info and all of the comments. :>) *

hey Maggie,
You didn’t get infected with anything. Your friend was infected and sent you the message.

I have been getting this messages also. They are coming from prople who are on my YM list but have not sent me any messages in a long time; I thought it was strange to be getting messages like this from those people; I have never opend the site, and have no intention to. I am wondering if there is any action I can/should take about this. It is anoying and disturbing and feel as though I should, if nothing else, inform the people, from whose YM ID I am receiving this Messages from, that their computer perhaps has a virus; I am also somewhat curious if there is some way to notify some sort of Autority about this and have even felt like taking some sort of retaliation on the darn company. Please let me know if there is anyting I can/should do about these anoying messages.

I have been off line and mobile people on my MSN list have been getting messages from my e-mail address that I didn’t send. I was off line at the time they got them. I have changed my password twice already. But people keep continuing to get strange messages. Some have been like the ones at the top but others have been different and they are making my friends mad. If there is a way to fix this please let me know.
