I’m sure you’ve heard about Smart offering Digital TV experience via Digital TV capable mobile phones.

Technically, only Smart is offering Digital TV to mobile phones through their MyTV service. All you need is a mobile phone that can receive Digital TV signals either from DVB-H or ISDB-H.
While globe has Mobile TV. So what’s the difference between Smart’s myTV and Globe’s Mobile TV? Well, its simple… myTV uses DVB-H technology while Mobile TV uses the ordinary streaming. So when you have both service side by side, you’ll see the big difference in the reception. Smart’s myTV is like crystal clear compared to teh streaming video of globe Mobile TV.

Until now, you can use myTV for free. Sort of an extended test run. Good for those who have DVB-H capable phones. Smart is also being questioned by the Philippine Cable TV Association (PCTA) as illegaly broadcasting Digital TV. See PCTA’s position here. And see Smart’s response here. In a way, i think smart will be able to go around this problem.
If you hear companies buying other companies with NTC license to broadcast Digital TV, then expect another network provider to offer Digital TV.. well, like San Miguel who just recently entered the telecoms business.
So what’s delaying Digital TV in mobile phones here in the Philippines? Well, i can only see one big hurdle… The lack of Philippine standard to be adopted and to be used. Well, as i’ve pointed out in my earlier posts about Digital TV in the Philippines, the country’s regulatory body has been on the “study” phase for quite a long time now. I don’t think they’ve heard of being proactive. They should have seen this coming and acted on it long before.
For Digital TV – Terrestrial, they can either make use of DVB or ISDB as both standards are somewhat the same. But for Digital TV forMobile, they might be inclined to consider DVB as its the standard that most Digital TV mobile -phone-capable are using.
Oh wait. don’t be confused when you people watching TV on their China mobile phones. That’s not Digital TV nor Streaming. That’s using the old ways.. using analog TV. Those phones have built-in antena that can pick-up analog tv signals which will become useless in the year 2015 – well, i think china phones with TV will still have a long way to go.
