Opera Mini 5 is now Opera Mobile 10

November 5th, 2009 | 8 Comments | Posted in Mobile Brands, Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson

As I was browsing through the press release of opera, I got confused of why they suddenly jumped from number 5 to 10. It was only a bit later that I realized that they are now calling the full and latest release of opera mini – opera browsers for mobile phones – as Opera Mobile 10.

See my previous post about Opera Mini 5 (beta) to know more about the features of this wonderful mobile browser.

Opera Mobile 10 beta is available for Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Samsung smartphones running Symbian/S60, 3rd and 5th editions. The beta is free to download to your computer from http://www.opera.com/mobile/next/ or directly to your mobile phone from http://m.opera.com/mobile/.

I hope next time, opera will be able to include the feature to enable our mobile phones to play flash.

    No, they aren’t.

Opera Mini is still there. It’s a thin browser client which requires a server to handle the page.

Opera Mobile is a full/standalone browser which handles the pages itself

Yeah, Opera Mini is a java based client which receives webpages which are processed and compressed on a seperate server which then sends them to the client. Mini is usually used on “dumbphones.”

Opera Mobile, on the other hand, handles all processing of web pages on its own, as a browser. This is usually used on smartphones and PPCs.

Opera Mini 5 is java based application and can be used on most mobile phones.
Opera Mobile 10 targeted to specific phones that have much greater processing power. Currently Opera Mobile will only run on WinMo and Symbian phones only.
