I have a 3G phone (Nokia N82) but I was in an area with no 3G signal. All I have was an internet connection. So i thought of using my laptop with a webcam to make a video call to a mobile phone. So I searched the internet, after a few minutes, I hit the jackpot!
The answer is Fring. Yes, the mobile application that lest you send instant messages to your IM contacts can now also enable your phones to make or receive video calls but only to your Skype contacts.
So far it only works on selected Nokia phones – X6, N97 mini,N97, 5800), N95, N95 8G and N82 devices. It seems to work partially on other symbian non-nokia phones. When I say partially, i mean one way video call only.
All you need to do is install fring on your mobile phone [Download fring now ].
How to make it work:
- To make a video call: from the option, choose CALL -> Video Call.
- To receive a video call: Press the middle button when you start to hear the incoming call notification. (first button is for voice call only)
Video quality depends on the Nokia mobile phone’s camera, your webcam, and the internet connection (mobile phone internet connection depends on the location).
I have only tried this with my wife who was in Manila while I was in ComVal. I’ll try it out with friends in another country. I’m sure it will work too!
Oh, with regards to charges, it will be free if you are both using free internet connection but if you are using 3G, then network charges will apply.

Yeah.. i actually downloaded Fring in my mobile phone.. :)
