Google drive now becomes official!

I was updating some of my android apps when I saw a new icon on my installed apps list. Then I saw the name.. Google Drive. However I noticed that it was asking me to “update” it.  But I don’t remember installing it before.

It turns out that Google Drive replaced Google Docs in the Google Play Store. So I updated Google Docs/Google Drive. It said in a pop-up that Google Drive is the new home for Google docs and it also replaced by Google Docs icon to the G Drive icon.

But I won’t be able to access it yet. I’ll wait for Google to notify me when I can access G drive.

While Google is readying G Drive, lets talk about the storage plans:

  • The FREE Google Drive account = 5 GB of Drive, 10 GB of Gmail, and 1 GB of Picasa
  • $2.49 / Month = 25 GB for Drive and Picasa + Your Gmail storage will be upgraded to 25 GB
  • $4.99 / Month = 100 GB for Drive and Picasa + Your Gmail storage will be upgraded to 25 GB.
  • Other plans (storage space / Monthly fee):
    • 200 GB $9.99
    • 400 GB $19.99
    • 1 TB $49.99
    • 2 TB $99.99
    • 4 TB $199.99
    • 8 TB $399.99
    • 16 TB $799.99

Note that Google bumped the storage limit of Gmail from 7GB to a max limit of 10GB. Yesterday, my Gmail limit was around 7GB+ now its 8641 MB (8.6GB). Update: as of April 26, 2012,  my Gmail’s max limit is now at 10240 MB (10GB).

I wonder what will happen to those currently paying $20/year for an 80GB Google Docs space now that a 100 GB is $60/year ($4.99/month x 12 months) in Google Drive.

Last week, I blogged about how I think other Google services will be integrated with Google Drive. Lets see how far that hunch proved to be true.

UPDATE:

April 26, 2012: My Google Drive is now ACTIVE

I like how fast you can work around Google Drive. Uploading and downloading docs and files. And yes I was right that docs files will automatically be opened in Google Docs.

You can download Google Drive here.

Google Driver is said to be a direct competitor for Dropbox. So for those of you who do not have a dropbox account yet, you may sign-up here.
